Everybody knows that a dogs breath can be really smelly. But, it’s no surprise because dogs can’t brush their teeth!

Taking appropriate care of your dogs teeth is important to get rid of bad dog breath, but an interesting study revealed that there might be even more pressing reasons – ones that might be important to the life of your dog.

Done at Purdue University by Dr. Larry Glickman the study included the records of over 100,000 dogs. This study included a group that had periodontal disease and an identical size group which did not. In accordance with the results of the study, dogs with gum disease have a higher rate of a particular type heart disease.

This was particularly true in the case of heart valve inflammation (endocarditis). Endocarditis was found in only .01 percent of dogs that didn’t suffer from gum disease and in .15 percent of dogs that had stage 3 periodontal disease.

So, you see it’s critical to have a good canine dental plan so as to keep your pet happy and healthy.

So, just how do you give good dental care to your dog?

It begins with cleaning your dogs teeth. It should start at home and you can purchase toothpaste specially made for dogs in addition to toothbrushes for canine teeth cleaning. It’s recommended to get in the habit of brushing daily. Daily brushing will assist in reducing tartar buildup and stave off gum disease.

You also might want to speak to your vet about scheduling a dental scaling. This dental procedure is similar to a cleaning you get at the dentist and involves scraping or scaling the tarter from your dogs teeth..

In addition there are dog chews and treats that will help with your canine dental plan. Some of the chew toys like Nylabones are made particularly to help scrape off plaque while your dog is chewing on them. There are a number of other treats that can help freshen your dogs breath.

Providing good dental care for your pet will give him the best prospect of a long, healthy life. If bacteria and plaque is left to build up on his teeth, that may lead to gum disease and also the bacteria can get into his blood stream and lead to health issues in other organs, including his heart.

Good dog dental care can help keep your dog healthy. It just takes a couple of minutes a day – isn’t your pet worth that much?.
