There are several common questions about dog vaccinations and what dog owners need to know about them. One of the most common questions about puppy vaccinations is whether your puppy should get a vaccination during the first week of their life.

All dogs should be vaccinated during the first five or six weeks since they were born but, if the vaccinations get missed for some reason then the vaccination against the parvovirus infections can be given and this should help to protect your puppy against various diseases.

The bordetella disease vaccine and also the lyme disease vaccine often leave dog owners wondering if they should be given to their pet dog or puppy. Well, these vaccines are usually considered to be optional but the parvoviral vaccine should not be used in first week of life because it can interfere with the maternal antibody levels gained from the milk of the mother.

Is it OK to have a pregnant bitch vaccinated? The answer is Yes. A pregnant dog may be vaccinated against viral diseases and this can aid in the protection of the puppies when they are born due to the beneficial maternal antibodies which can be passed on to the young puppies

A lot of people wonder if giving the rabies vaccine to dogs is beneficial and the answer is that yes, it can be very good to help protect your dog from Rabies. If you do have your dog vaccinated with the Rabies protective vaccine it will usually be given at around the age of thirteen to fifteen weeks of age and it should be repeated again in around fifteen months or so and then again every three years. Rabies is a terrible disease in both animals and humans and you should ensure your dog gets vaccinated against it if you live in a part of the world where Rabies is a problem.

Canine distemper is another nasty disease and vaccination can prevent its development in your dog. This disease is more often seen in some countries than others but vaccination is usually considered to be a very important protection for your dog and its health in the future.

Vaccination against leptospirosis can be given at around 6 to 8 weeks of age with a repeated vaccination of your puppy at 10 to 12 weeks followed by one more injection at somewhere between the 13th and 16th week to give full protection.

I don’t know about you but there have been times when I suddenly feel a lot of pain and I’m not entirely sure on what to do about it. How much more difficult it must be for our pets. I mean, they cannot even articulate what it is specifically that ails them, how much more find out the things they need to relieve them of the discomfort. Therefore it is largely up to us to study and understand what we can do to help our dogs the best way possible.

Canines that are in pain exhibit symptoms that are pretty much the same regardless of the reasons that may have caused it. These dogs will often whimper, refuse to eat or drink, be depressed, tremble and shake and show signs of laziness. When these symptoms manifest, it’s time you visit the vet and get a proper diagnosis of his condition.

Fortunately, dog pain relievers are made available in pet stores and canine sites that will really help your pet. Expect the vet to prescribe an NSAID or non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug with a supplement to relieve pain. However, if you can’t get to your vet right now, or if you need immediate help for your dog’s condition, here are some simple dog pain relief at home remedies you can try.

One of the fastest ways to help your dog is to manage his daily movements so that he doesn’t have to do anything that will further aggravate whatever condition he is in. Settle him down in a comfortable place where all his doggie toys, water bowl and food dish are. Limit physical activity to regular trips to the bathroom for now.

If the cause of his discomfort is an area of swelling, get an ice pack and apply it on the spot for about 15 to 20 minutes. This reduces swelling effectively. Let it rest for a while and then apply the pack again. Do this for the next 2 days or until the swelling goes down. Don’t use warm compress for any inflammation. Warm compress is good only for relieving muscle tension.

Never ever administer prescription drugs like Aspirin, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Advil and Acetaminophen as dog pain relievers. Human medications have stronger substances that can be very dangerous to dogs when administered in large amounts. Aspirin may seem mild to you but it causes the dog to have ulcers. Furthermore, it thins out the blood, an especially dangerous thing for animals undergoing surgery.

Another excellent dog pain relief at home is this: massage. It sounds simple enough but it helps tremendously in reducing the canine’s pain. Massage stimulates better blood flow and eases muscle tension that the dog connects to pain. Get a few drops of any aromatic oil and gently massage it to the sore muscles of the dog.

I understand how hard it must be for you to know that your dog is experiencing pain; but you are doing in your part by taking him to regular medical check-ups and maintaining a good and healthy diet. Do your best in making sure he is strong and healthy and it will inevitably be that way before long. Enjoy!

Every pet owner should know where to find effective dog pain relievers for their beloved pets.

Ticks and fleas are a common problem which can frustrate you and your dog, and they can potentially cause severe health issues. There are many different powders and sprays out there, but with their chemical-based formulas, they could be harmful to the pet’s health or to yours.

Don’t worry – those powders and sprays aren’t your only means of defense against these tiny tyrants. You can fight them off with natural remedies that are safe for everyone and can be effective for your dog.

Check the shelves at the pet store. They sell many products that are entirely produced from natural ingredients. They have no chemicals that could be unsafe for your pets or family, but they have ingredients that are very effective in getting rid of the pesky pests.

Some powders and sprays don’t contain any chemicals either. You can find shampoos and special flea brushes to remove them from our dog’s coat. There are some treatments that you can apply directly to the dog’s skin that won’t harm the dog in any way, but will kill the fleas.

You can always choose a flea collar which repels fleas without any chemicals coming in contact with the skin.

Take extra care to clean your dog and your home. Bathe and brush your dog at least once every week. Make sure to vacuum your carpets and keep your dog’s bedding clean.

Warm, humid areas are perfect for fleas to lay their eggs, so they should be vacuumed often. It’s advisable to sprinkle a little Borax or a bit of laundry detergent on your carpets before you vacuum.

These products kill fleas and eggs, which you can then vacuum. Make sure your pets and any children aren’t around when you do it. Even if they are not harmful, a little caution never hurts.

There are some homemade treatments that many pet owners claim to work very well. It might be best to consult your veterinarian first.

Garlic and Brewer’s yeast seem to be effective. Be careful when you use them. Keep your grass cut and your bushes edged, so that it will be more difficult for fleas to get on your dog.

With some of these tips, you can avoid using chemical treatments that could be harmful to your dog. And also, if you use environmentally safe products, you and your dog will enjoy a healthier life.

Bedding is very important for a dog, especially a puppy which has just been taken away from its mother. In fact, if you can arrange it, it is a good idea to leave a blanket with your puppy when it is still with its mother and siblings, that way the blanket will remind him of home, which will be a big comfort to it in its early days of loneliness.

The best material to use for your blanket is wool. Wool is absorbent and so holds some moisture and smells, which will help the animal feel at more home. Wool is also pretty tough and warm, not that warmth is really a major concern for a dog that lives in the house.

There is no need to purchase a special blanket for your dog. You can cut down an old blanket of your own, a metre square is roughly right. This is big enough for any dog, will fit in a dog basket comfortably and is yet not too large to go in the washing machine every couple of of months. If you do not want to run to the expense of using a blanket of wool, you could make use of an old towel, since towels are also absorbent.

Most dog owners allow their pets to sleep in the house and some even allow their dog to sleep on the bed. If you allow your dog to sleep in the house, it is best not to give food to him after about six or seven o’clock or you will have to let him out or take him out late at night.

It is better to feed your dog twice a day than only once and be careful of leaving food down all day, particularly if there is no-one at home during the day to let him out.

If you choose to leave your dog in the garden all day and night, you will have to provide even more shelter for him. A kennel or dog house is the best way of doing this. A kennel ought to have a wooden floor which is a couple of inches above the ground.

You could put a couple of inches of straw in the kennel for your dog to make his bed and you can put a blanket or two in there as well. Do not worry about what you think it should look like, your dog knows best in these matters. If you can not run to either blankets or towels, believe it or not your dog will be just as pleased with crumpled up sheets of newspaper for bedding. Newspaper is soft, absorbent and astonishingly warm, which is why tramps use it. It is also cheap and easy to replace when it becomes dirty after rainfall.

A dog instinctively tries to form a nest to sleep in. I am sure that you will have noticed that dogs walk around in a circle three times before lying down. This is to flatten the grass before lying down and they do it whether there is grass underneath them or not. If you supply some kind of bedding he will not be wasting his time.

Ask any satisfied pet owner and they will tell you the same thing- delicious homemade dog treats are the best way to a healthy and happy pet. This is not to say all commercial pet food are bad-there are some good brands available in the grocery store; but homemade is still better. So are you ready to make some treats? You will know how to make dog treats by the time you finish this article.

Before anything else, have your pet examined by a licensed veterinarian. You need to know the condition of his health so you can make necessary adjustments in his meals. Does the animal have a health issue that warrants a specific diet modification? You can make it in such a way that you find recipes that include food with the needed nutrients in his snacks.

Decide on the kind of treats you want to make for the dog. Generally you can choose if you want the sweet variety or the more savory treats. When you decide on what you want, make sure that the recipe you have does not contain ingredients that are harmful to canines. You can look up these toxic food substances and post it in your kitchen.

After, it’s time to prepare the things you need. What are you putting in your culinary creations? Any kind of meat should be good except for salmon and raw fish. Salmon has been said to have caused infections in canines on a number of cases. Organ meat like liver is good; however, you must serve it in measured amounts. Too much of liver results in vitamin A toxicity.

If you want to put in fruits for the added vitamins, you can. However, avoid grapes, apricots, peaches, cherries and avocados. Some of the seeds of these fruits activate cyanide poisoning. Why not also buy special canine related cookie cutters and molds? It makes your treats even more interesting and more than that-other people might find it fun and would want to order some from you as well.

Now you have everything prepared, it’s time to get some cooking done! Do what the recipe tells you to do-boil, bake, toast or assemble the food together. When cooking meat, take out all the bones as these bones splinter when cooked. Otherwise, the canine might choke on his snack. Chop up these goodies in small pieces so it will be easy to chew and enjoy.

So now you’re done making the treats-what next? It is a good idea to make a few extra batches of the treats and keep them to save on time and money. Store the homemade treats in a sealed bag and keep them in the freezer until you need them. Make sure you defrost before you serve it to your eager pets-chilled teeth will make it harder to enjoy yummy food.

Now you know how to make dog treats-it’s pretty simple right? Just about anybody can do it. Go ahead and start applying what you just learned today.

Pets are great and as pet owners we can’t help to love them dearly. Whether we own a cat, a dog or a parrot they have become part of our lives and we’re in theirs to keep them safe. Now even though this might not seem like an impossible task there are still a lot of different aspects that goes into taking care of a pet or at least there is if you’re going to take GOOD care of it.

Pet food have long been debated but more and more studies show that a lot of the illnesses and serious conditions that make our pets suffer is cause by us as pet owners. Not feeding the pets a high quality food will in effect have their immune system become less effective.

When you truly realize the effect that malnutrition can have on your pet (and yourself) you’ll be likely to change habits instantly. And if you find yourself in that situation or if you’re have been giving it some thoughts that your pet might not be fed the right pet food, then luckily there is a perfect solution. And that is to go see your VET and ask her what she recommends.

A lack of money is often the reason that people are not feeding their pets the right kind of food. High quality pet food is really expensive and most people will find it hard to justify to spend more money on food for their pets that they do on food for themselves.

So what will the consequences be of not wanting or being able to feed your pet the food that it will need for optimal nutritional intake? Well in many cases it will be that it’ll have a harder time rejecting bacteria and viruses and it is therefore more likely to become ill.

Accidents tends to occur more often to pets will low levels of energy and poor health conditions and in most of these situation it is caused partially by the lack of good food. It is sad as the solution is so obvious.

With low levels of energy and when missing the essential building blocks of the body an accident or a serious illness will tend to go on for a lot longer because the body will not be as likely to heal itself fast.

So maybe you should instead consider signing up for a pet insurance plan as that might become necessary if your pet gets ill and needs medication or if it gets into an accident that surgery and hospital bills might become something that you will need to find the money to pay for.

For guidance on finding low cost pet insurance be sure to check out our website. We have listed several low cost pet health insurance plans and we’ll explain to you all the advantages and disadvantages of each one. And it is all free so do not hesitate.

Roundworms are circular and tubular in shape. Generally they are 2-4 inches in size but it can grow up to 7 inches in a short period of time. There are two common types of roundworms: Toxascaris leonina and Toxacara canis.

Roundworms are parasites that are passed to the puppy in the womb through egg or larvae. They can also be passed to the puppies though the milk of the mother. Aside from this, puppies can also get roundworms if they get close to the feces of an animal with the said parasite or through the feces of their mother. Consuming prey infected with roundworms can make the puppies acquire the infection as well. The larvae moves through the liver, then to the muscles, then to the lungs and then to the puppies’ intestines where they feed on the partially digested food.

If infected with roundworms, puppies may have trouble in swallowing and urinating. The symptoms of roundworm infestation include frequent vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea, dry or dull hair, bloated stomach and loss of appetite. If the puppies are not de-wormed immediately, the infestation may lead to the puppies’ demise.

De-worming of puppies that are about 3 weeks old is essential since their body resistance is low and this might cause for roundworm infestation. There are medicines that can control roundworms; these are Fendendaole, Pyrantel and Piperazine. However, these medicines can cause serious side effects to puppies. Thus, it is highly recommended to seek the opinion of your veterinarian first before giving your puppy anything. Puppies eventually develop resistance to any infection when they are already 6 months old.

The veterinarian usually does microscopic exam on the puppy’s stool to determine the presence of roundworms. After that, he/she will give the necessary prescription for the puppy. The treatment for roundworms do not kill the parasites, it will just remove the parasite from the puppy’s body by its stool. The treatment for roundworms can last for two months for there are instances that the roundworms’ larvae are still inside the puppy’s intestines.

Homeopathy is one kind of treatment that is considered to be safe. This is done my mixing – to 2 cloves of chopped fresh garlic and grated carrots to the puppies’ meal. Oat barns can also be used instead of grated carrots. Also, wash and disinfect the area where the puppies usually defecate with a mixture of bleach and water.

The treatment for roundworm infestation can be a big job, thus, it is really best to follow proper dog care steps to keep the symptoms at bay. Ensure to check your puppy’s body to see if there are other parasites living off its body. Dispose the puppy’s food immediately if it does not want to eat it. Never leave the food open for a long time and disinfect the surroundings. Deworming your pregnant dog during the latter stages of pregnancy can also help lessen the roundworm infection on its puppies. Keep in mind to deworm your puppy as and when it is needed. Keep your puppies from the places where other dogs do their bowel movements and dispose your puppies’ feces properly. Roundworms and other dog worms can also infect humans, thus, proper dog care and hygiene is vital.

Neutering is the removal of an animal’s reproductive organs. In male dogs, it refers to castration, a process during which the testicles are removed. In female canines, it refers to spaying, which involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries. Many owners refuse or neglect to neuter their pets. But there are several advantages to doing so, including health benefits that may extend the life of your dog.

In this article, we’ll provide a brief list of the most important reasons to have your pet neutered. You’ll discover that doing so will not only benefit your canine, but will make him a more pleasant companion for you and your family.

Reduced Tendency To Roam

Male dogs that are left intact are more inclined to roam in search of mating partners. In the wild, this behavior is natural and unlikely to result in injury or death. In the city, however, they may wander into streets and become injured by drivers who are unable to avoid hitting them.

Neutering reduces your pet’s tendency to roam. This in turn reduces the likelihood he’ll leave your property and become injured.

Fewer Prostate-Related Issues

Unneutered dogs are more susceptible to problems related to their prostates as they age. In most cases, this involves enlargement of the gland, which can make it more difficult for your pet to urinate. Sometimes, the gland can become infected, or a mass will begin to develop and grow. On rare occasions, intact canines cope with prostate cancer.

Castration of male canines sharply reduces the risk of prostate issues. Such problems can still occur, but they are much less likely in neutered pets.

Less Aggression

An intact dog is more likely to display aggressive behavior toward other male canines. The reason is believed to be due to testosterone, which surges through their bodies. It drives them to compete for female mating partners, and may even extend toward protection of their territory.

This behavior declines in most dogs following castration. Because they are less inclined to aggressively confront other canines, they are less likely to fight and become injured.

Less Inclination To Mark Territory

Your pet, if left unneutered, may mark territory that he considers his own. This may include bushes and trees in the neighborhood, or your garden, yard, and house. Urine marking is common among all dogs, but more so with those that are intact.

Many experts believe marking behavior may be due to testosterone. As with aggression, canines may be more motivated to claim territory they believe is their own. Neutering your pet may help curb the behavior.

Removes Risk Of Testicular Cancer

When intact dogs reach five years of age, the risk of testicular cancer rises significantly. Tumors may form inside the testicles, which places the animal’s life in danger. Neutering your male pet eliminates this risk, and thus helps prolong his life.

Helps Reduce The Problem Of Overpopulation

Sadly, millions of canines are euthanized each year due to overpopulation. Many become lost while others are simply abandoned by their owners. Animal shelters often lack the space to take them in, leaving few alternatives to euthanization.

One of the reasons there are so many dogs is because owners neglect to have their pets neutered. This leads to roaming and breeding, which results in overpopulation. By having your male pet castrated, you’ll eliminate his contribution to this growing problem.

Dispelling Common Myths About Neutering

A lot of owners refuse to have their canines neutered because they fear doing so will lead to undesirable consequences. In most cases, however, these presumed consequences are based on fallacies. For example, some believe castration leads to weight problems, apathy, and personality changes. Issues involving weight are entirely under the control of the owner. Canines become less active with age, and their diets should be modified to accommodate their energy levels.

A castrated dog does not become apathetic due to being neutered. He may be less inclined to roam, but his energy level should remain consistent. Your pet will still want to play and enjoy walks with you.

Regarding personality, there may be changes due to less aggression. But most owners welcome such changes since aggressive behavior is often problematic.

There are many compelling reasons to have your dog neutered, and very few reasons to choose otherwise. In the end, you’ll improve his quality of life, and likely extend his lifespan.

Epilepsy in dogs can be an inherited trait or it may be brought on by preservatives in the type of dog food they are eating. Certain breeds have a slightly higher percentage for risk of the condition than others. It is possible that a dog may have one of three different types of the condition. Most canine epilepsy can be treated with diet change, the proper medications and periodic liver enzyme testing.

A certain genetic basis for seizures has actual been proven in the breeds of Beagles, German Shepherds, Dachshunds, Belgian Tervurens and Keeshonds. There is some evidence that suggests that the English Springer Spaniel may also be predisposed genetically. The condition is quite common in dogs and even when not inherited, they may develop it over the course of their lifetime. Seizures have been linked to conditions related to the thyroid as well and this should be tested initially at diagnosis.

Changing the dogs diet is going to be the first and one of the best courses of treatment to avoid preservatives that are likely to be causing the problem. For breeds that are at particularly high risk anyway, foods that contain preservatives should be avoided from the beginning to eliminate the development of the condition. Check labels closely regarding preservatives in food; it will be clear on packaging.

The three various type of epilepsy that may occur with canines are reactive, secondary and primary. Seizures labeled as reactive involve the metabolic system. These are always related to either low blood sugar, kidney failure or liver failure.

Secondary refers to symptomatic and is labeled this way because the cause is actually known. The problem is most likely related to stroke or tumors located within the brain. Many times these types of seizures will occur after a particular trauma.

Primary or idiopathic seizures are labeled as such due to having no known cause. This diagnosis is reached when all other probable conditions have been completely eliminated. These are likely to begin in dogs that are in the age group of one and three.

Different types of seizures present and they can last for different time lengths and at various intensity levels. A petit mal is considered mild and may be brief and only result in a brief moment of looking upward or staring while the grand mal is moderate and can last for as long as three minutes with a possible loss of consciousness. Status epilepticus and cluster seizures are difficult to differentiate between and both are considered life threatening. They can go on for long periods with loss of consciousness and then return.

Many medications are available for the treatment of seizures including Phenobarbital, potassium bromide and Valium. When Phenobarbital is being used as the medication of choice, it is necessary to monitor the liver functions closely to avoid liver damage. Should the liver become damaged, the pet will be changed to a medication of potassium bromide for continued treatment. Valium is usually reserved for status epilepticus and cluster seizures and is given either by injection, rectally or orally. Over the counter medications can be used to comfort the animal after seizures to assist with faster recover time; consult a veterinarian about which types are best to use for treatment of canine epilepsy for a particular pet.

Or moreover being a dog owner can you differentiate between the two disorders?

Or moreover being a dog owner can you differentiate between the two disorders?

Ear mites in dogs could be contagious between animals – your pet dog may pass them to your feline and vice versa, or perhaps a mother might pass them to her pups.

The more common species of ear mites in dogs is Otodectes cynotis; nevertheless, all sorts of mites are taken care of in the same manner.

If you notice that your dog is itching his ears continuously or perhaps is tossing or shaking his / her head, it usually indicates some problem with the ear.

You will need to take a look at the inside of the dog’s ear, and close up.

When the ear mites are fairly new and the infestation isn’t yet that severe, you possibly will not notice much of anything, but you will need to take remember that your dog will not be itching and scratching its ears for absolutely no reason therefore look closer, and monitor the situation.

You do not have to worry about “catching” mites from the dog; they certainly do not transfer from animals to humans.

Conversely, if you notice or see what appears like coffee grounds within your dog’s ear, this really is a sign of a severe infection associated with ear mites in dogs. These types of “coffee grounds” are bits of dried blood that has piled up inside of the ear.

It is important not just to identify these types of symptoms, but additionally to deal with them when you notice that there’s an infestation.

Failure to treat and eradicate ear mites can lead to more serious concerns such as long term damage to your dog’s ear canal as well as ear drum, and might even result in a loss in hearing.

Once you have determined your dog does have mites, you ought to examine your pet from head to tail. Mites can live anywhere in your dog’s body, not just his ears, and thus when you start treating the mites, you will need to make sure that you destroy them all.

The most typical treatment for ear mites is by using a medication that contains insecticide, most often pyrethrin.

It’s a waste of time to utilize any treatment that does not contain an insecticide, because it will likely be ineffective.

Basically this can be a medicated shampoo that will get rid of the issue in a short time.

Thus bringing the dog back to health swiftly.
