dog potty training is not such a hard task as many imagine it to be. Obviously it requires you to devote some effort and time but with correct guidance, your dog shall be correctly toilet trained quickly.

Potty training a puppy is far simpler than toilet training an older dog, in the puppy stage they are still learning and will quickly learn new things. Firstly you need to understand that throughout this dog potty training process there will probably be a couple of accidents every so often where the puppy will urinate or poop inside your home and you must understand that this isn’t the puppies fault because it doesn’t know where it is allowed or not allowed to go to eliminate, you need to teach this to the puppy by training it, also the other thing you must understand is that puppies do not have full control over their bowel and bladders until they’re about a couple of months old.

When dog potty training, and pretty much all training, do not EVER punish your dog. Punishing your dog will not show it that it has pooped or urinated in the incorrect place, your dog will probably think that urinating and pooping is not allowed and every time it relieves itself it will hide the proof by licking up the urine or eating the poop! These are behavioral issues that many individuals have in their dogs as a result of owners punishing their dogs when they had been still puppies. Only praise and give your dog a treat to reward it whenever it does something right, for example relieving itself outdoors in a specific area.

Puppies need to relieve themselves all the time! Listed below are the most common times when a puppy would need to go to the toilet:   

* After waking up from a nap    

* After waking up from a long sleep   

* After consuming food, including small snacks    

* After play sessions     

It is It is very important that you have a daily schedule for these key times for your dog. By having a schedule, your dog potty training routine will go a lot more smoothly, since you already know when you will have to take your dog outside so it may relieve itself.

The dog potty training process will involve you choosing a chosen area outside where you’ll always take your dog out to on a leash. Usually about 5-10 minutes after the key times talked about above, your dog will need to relieve itself. Make sure you take your dog outside to the selected place within this time frame and leave it alone throughout this time. Your dog will most likely have a sniff around on the ground and then begin eliminating. After your dog is finished show your dog with enthusiasm that you’re pleased with it for eliminating in the correct place, a treat or some praise will do the trick. Continue doing this every time you need to take your dog outside to eliminate.

Some obvious indicators that your dog needs to go are when:

* Your dog is sniffing the ground and going around in circles  

* Your dog barks at you  

* Scratching on the door to try to get outdoors to the spot where it normally goes to eliminate  

* Running to you then running back to the door and continuing this over and over   

If you happen to find your dog peeing or pooping inside your home then quickly take your dog outside to the designated place and let it finish its business there and proceed with the reward system to indicate to your dog that you are happy that it has gone in the correct place. If on the way you carry your dog out and it’s still peeing or pooping then it’s too late and the only thing you can do is clean up the mess and get rid of the smell with a deodorizer because dogs tend to relieve themselves again in an place where they can smell the scent of their waste. Dogs like to pee and poop where they can smell the scent of their waste so a great trick many dog owners use is to leave some of the waste out where they want their dog to urinate or poop.

Dog potty training a mature dog:

It may be a bit more of a challenge when it comes to potty training an older dog however it’s still very doable. Use the same rules and strategies used to potty train a puppy to potty train an older dog, it is going to have the same effect, you will just need to be more patient because it would take your matured dog somewhat longer to learn and catch onto what you are trying to teach it. Remember not to get angry at your dog if it poops or pees inside your house, and DO NOT a BIG DO NOT ever hit your dog or rub its face in its own waste, this may teach it to be afraid of you and next time it needs to eliminate, your dog will look for a good hiding place to pee or poop at and this will make issues worse for you. Practice makes perfect and this is also true with dog potty training, the more you and your dog practice and train the quicker your dog will learn where it’s appropriate to go when it needs to go to the toilet.
