House Train Your Puppy the Easy Way
Bringing home a new puppy is always an exciting and fun time for the family. The whole family loves playing with the new puppy. Of course, there is one aspect of the new puppy no one likes-the puppy thinks the whole world is his toilet. Make the whole house training process easier by using the crate training method for house training your new puppy. Trust me on this, because I used to try it old school, using the newspaper on the floor method. The paper method did work in a manner of sorts, but it was a lot more work and occasionally my puppy would somehow miss the papers. The dark night I stepped on one of these misses, deviously hidden on the way to the bathroom by my sneaky puppy, was the night I decided to give crate training a try.
The crate training method for puppy house training is a system that greatly reduces the number of “accidents” that will most likely happen around the house before your puppy has been thoroughly house trained. You are asked to keep your new puppy inside his crate all the time unless you are actively supervising him-such as it’s playtime or dinner time or time for some training. That’s because it seems that if you aren’t actively watching him, that is when he is most likely to leave a puddle or drop a bomb on the carpet.
- Keep your puppy in his crate near you during the day so he feels more secure and comfortable. For example, if you are at home working in your office, keep him in the crate in your office with you. You can also keep an eye and ear open for any whining that might indicate it is time for a potty break. Don’t let him out frequently just because he is bored, but be sure to let him out if it seems like it is time for potty .
- You can be sure he will need to have a bathroom break after he wakes up from a nap, so listen for sounds of activity in the crate, and be ready to take him out to his spot. You will also notice your puppy will relieve himself within about 30 minutes at most after eating and drinking, so don’t put him back in the crate until that has happened. If you always bring him to the same area to relieve himself and reward him for a job well done, you will be positively reinforcing him to go where you want him to learn to go.
- When it is time for the puppy to have a nice break, you can feed him, play with him, and make sure he gets enough exercise and maybe a little early training that he is tired out when he gets back in the crate. If he is tired out, there is a good chance he might sleep the next 2 hours and not have any boredom issues before it is time for the next fun break.
- Being consistent with the crate training is crucial to making it work right. If you are lax about leaving him out of the crate until he is house trained, he will surely have some accidents. You don’t want any accidents at all to happen, because once they do, the puppy will be able to smell that spot even after you have cleaned it up, and may want to revisit it again. Don’t yell or hit your puppy if he does have an accident, as this negative behavior will only serve to intimidate and confuse the puppy. If you happen to see your puppy about to squat, try to stop him with a firm “No” command, and take him outside to the regular spot. Always remain on the positive side, praising and reward, but not yelling or hitting. Like anything else, the closer you adhere to the crate training system’s methods, the quicker and better the progress you will see.
The crate training technique was so much simpler and neater and easier that the paper on the floor method. In fact, it took my latest puppy only about 2 weeks to become house trained. The puppy whined some the first few nights, but because I didn’t feed it or give him much water before bedtime, I knew he was just bored-only let them out for potty breaks at night or they are training you to let them out when they whine. If you always make the crate seem like a den, rather than a place to put your puppy when you are mad at him, he will have a good attitude about going in there, and you shouldn’t have the whining problem some puppies have when in the crate.
