How To Be Accepted As The Alpha Dog Leader
In the wild dogs naturally live in dog packs. There is only one leader of the dog pack. Your dog sees your family as his pack. Dogs have a natural instinct to be the pack leader. Your dog will attempt to take on the position as the pack leader, or alpha dog, if you have not assumed that role with your dog.
The alpha dog, within the pack, makes all the major decisions. The alpha dog is the center of attention for the dogs in the pack. The alpha dog is always defending his role as the leader of the pack. Under normal conditions the lead dog will never give up his position willingly.
Is it clear who the alpha dog is in your family? If it is not you, your dog will take the position on himself. An alpha dog is not always male, in a dog pack the gender does not matter. However, because male dogs are usually larger in size than the female of the same breed, male dogs are usually the alpha leader. If the position of alpha dog is left vacant a female dog will assume the role of alpha leader. If your dog demonstrates bad or destructive dog behavior it is because he feels he is the alpha dog within your family. Pulling on a leash, chasing, and aggression are all examples of a dog feeling he is the alpha dog leader in his sphere of influence.
Confusion as to who the alpha dog is, in your family, leads your dog to think of himself as your equal. You as a dog owner must exude the qualities of the alpha dog leader at all times. The alpha qualities are displayed by voice tones, body language and an attitude of confidence. If you want your dog to accept you as the alpha dog leader you must feel comfortable in that role.

The role of the alpha dog is retained through small deliberate acts. For instance, within the dog pack the alpha leader always eats first. There may be little to eat when it is finally the packs turn. The alpha dog does not go around the pack, he will show his dominance by nudging his way through the pack. Those things within the pack’s area of influence are controlled by the alpha dog.
Why is the role of the alpha dog within a dog pack necessary to understand? This is your family, why should you be concerned with the dog hierarchy and its functioning? The answer is simple. Being the alpha dog leader should not require force or physical or verbal abuse of any kind. Your dog will look to you as the alpha dog leader as you imitate the qualities of an alpha dog.
It is easier to establish yourself as the alpha dog with a puppy than it is with an adult dog. This is especially true if that adult dog has been its own alpha dog leader. Although it is easy to establish alpha leadership with a puppy that does not mean alpha dog leadership will always be your position. Being an alpha dog requires a twenty-four hour commitment.
