So, you want to learn about training Yorkie puppies because you have recently become a proud owner of an adorable new Yorkie. Fantastic! You are in for a lot of happy moments with this intelligent, loyal dog. But, in order to have the best experience with the Yorkie, you need to know that you have to properly train and socialize your pet in order to reach this full potential.

Being a very active breed of dogs, they are particularly energetic as puppies. Getting that energy out should be part of training Yorkie puppies for sure. One way of doing this is to take them on walks. Playing around outside is another way of releasing that energy. Have a lot of toys for your Yorkie will help in this as well. Additionally, training your pup with commands is an effective way of mentally stimulating the dog, which will also help it get energy out.

To start training Yorkie puppies, you need to teach your pup commands, both positive and negative ones. A command of “good boy” is an example of a positive. “Down!” is a negative command. It’s important that the puppy starts to connect good and bad behavior with these obedience commands. When you give a negative command, do not yell or beat your dog, simply use a firm, loud tone to convey your disapproval of bad behavior.

No doubt this is of great importance: start training Yorkie puppies when they are young. Ideally you should start soon after they turn 8 weeks old. It will be difficult to break bad habits for Yorkies if you wait too long as they will grow into the bad behavior. Set the frame as the end goal that you control the setting of the home 100% of the time.

It’s really important that the Yorkie understand that you are the Alpha pact leader and not the Yorkie. All of your training efforts will be stolen if they Yorkie thinks he is the alpha pact leader.

When the Yorkie is a puppy, it’s a good idea to start crate training.

To Use Crates: Training Yorkie Puppies

Crate training requires the puppy to sleep in it whenever you are not around to supervise, and when they go to sleep at night. On many levels, although temping to have that puppy Yorkie in your bed, it’s actually bad for the Yorkie. The crate should become the puppy’s safe haven, and they have to learn to love the comfort and security it affords them. Crate training can help eliminate separation anxiety, barking problems, assist in housebreaking, and other beneficial training techniques.
