Stop Your Dog From Chewing
It is just a fact that that all doggies will chew on something in their life-time. But is it chronic chewing behavior that for our sake’s, we need to do something about. Is it destructive enough to take action?
Why Do Doggies Chew?
- Helps ease the pain during the process of puppy teething
- Dog’s mouths are equivalent to our hands
- {They get bored! and they will chew your things when bored or anxious}
Stress can cause dogs to chew. To fix it, we need to learn a thing or two. Can you image? It’s US that need to learn in this case. What do ya know?
How To Stop Dog Chewing:
His environment is everything, so you must definitely doggy proof your house somewhat. Just think of him like a little kid and put certain things up high or in the closet until he can be trusted. No Problem!
Make fun chew toys always easily accessible. And make sure to have clean water out just as frequently – dogs get thirsty too! Dog training is all about technique and using your head to think through bad dog behavior.
Be sure to keep certain items of yours that are exciting to chew, out of the way. Any item that you need unchewed could be: socks and shoes, stuffies and other kids toys, hats, magazines, TOILET PAPER ROLLS, and such. And make sure to tuck away any electrical wires so these don’t get chewed and your dog doesn’t get hurt.
And please don’t just leave him to his own devices in your house while you go out for long periods. That’s just looking for trouble.
Another exeptional tip is not to purchase the shoe-shaped chew toy; guess why not? This is just showing her that shoes are up for grabs.
As hinted at above, dog proof your home and have special areas sectioned off like the kitchen if it is roomy enough. Please leave him a cushion to lie on as lying on the floor is cold for you and me, and so, it’s cold for our dogs too.
Something to consider; no dog likes to be left and no human does either for that matter. Please get him a friend if you need to be away a lot.
Some Other Things To Consider:
One good solid way is to Interrupt and Redirect in the middle of a good chewing session. This will work wonders if you are consistent!
Just Interrupt her when you catch her red handed. Say ‘No’ firmly. And make sure not to shout her name because we want her name to be associated with good times.
And Redirect her to one of her own chew toys. With solid consitency, this will cause her to figure out that certain things are off limits and her chew toys are fair game.
