Dogs are known to have unexplainable behaviors. Dogs have been kept by humans for thousands of years but in spite of this fact dogs have some behaviors that cannot be understood by humans. Experts find the study of these perplexing behaviors of our furry and four legged friends very interesting. Dogs have an unexplainable appetite for grass; have the propensity to sniff each others butts. Dog owners are forever curious about the rotating-before-lying down routine of dogs. A lot of dog owners are mystified by the dog’s habit of chasing the tail .

Dogs are known for their playful personalities. Dog experts theorize that tail chasing which is more common in puppies is due to the fact that puppies believe that the tail is a toy that can be played with and not a body part. The inclination to chase the tail which is common in puppies would eventually decrease as the puppy gets older.

Dogs can deal with the discomfort caused by flies by using the tail as a fly swatter. A sleeping dog pestered by flies and other insects would get up and chase its tail. A dogs infested with fleas would do the same thing. Fleas on the dog’s tail would cause immense itching so that the pet will be seen chasing and biting its tail. The itching of the anal area caused by intestinal parasites would make the dog bite and chase the tail in an effort to ease the discomfort.

Dogs are social animals – always wanting interaction with the human family. A dog that has the habit of chasing its tail may be calling the attention of the human family. Bored dogs have the tendency to develop unwanted behaviors. The bored dogs can become an excessive barker, a destructive chewer and also develop the habit to chase its tail.

This perplexing behavior can be an indication that the dog has a neurological problem. Psychomotor epilepsy that causes the dog to seize is another reason why a dog would chase its tail. The habit of chasing the tail is most commonly seen in dogs that have high cholesterol levels. High cholesterol causes humans to manifest obsessive compulsive behaviors and to have panic attacks. In adult dogs, the habit of chasing the tail can be caused by high cholesterol levels.

Dog owners would always be in search for the reasons behind the dog’s odd behaviors. These unusual actions can be due to behavioral or medical reasons. Studies on dog behavior may or may not provide answers for this concern but the outcome will not cause humans to love dogs less.

Do you know why your dog would meet you excitedly with a wagging tail? Dogs do not have the ability to talk but with they can easily convey their affection and whatever they want to convey to their human friends by using various body movements. Dog can easily show various emotions simply by the movements of the tail. The wiggling of the dog’s tail typifies its friendly personality. Dogs and kids are known to form a legendary bond. Dogs are generally friendly with children thus it is common for these animals to meet a child with an excitedly wagging tail.

Animal behaviorists theorize that the wagging of the tail is one of the body movement dogs do to communicate with humans and with each other and with other animals. Dogs don’t talk, dogs don’t have hands but they can communicate by using various parts of the body. For a dog, the tail is the most effective communication tool. Dogs would recognize the presence of other dogs at a distance by waving the tail. This behavior is believed to be the dogs’ way of greeting each other.

The way the tail is wagged is believed to depend on the emotional condition of the dog. A tail that is raised high with only the tip wagging stiffly is an indication of aggression. Dogs wagging the tail this way may attack. Some dogs are considered “yellow” pets not because of the yellow colored fur but because of its nervous personality. Nervous dogs will be noticed easily because the tail that is held low between the legs is wagged slowly.

Aside from being a form of communication, the to and fro movements of the tail is theorized by dog experts as an indication of submission. Having descended from wolves; dogs are also pack oriented like their ancestors. Wolves that are lower in rank would have to recognize the leader of the pack and the way the tail is held is believed to be a form of submission to the alpha male. In the presence of the alpha male, dogs lower in rank would have a tail that is held lower than the topline and wagged slowly. Alpha male would manifest the dominance by holding the tail high and wagging in a no-nonsense manner.

Dogs wag their tails in different manners and to be able to know the emotional state of the pet, it would be very necessary for a dog owner to make an effort to understand what the pet is trying to convey through the movements of the tail.

Dogs are used by man in various capacities. Majority of dog owners keep the dog as pets because these are very loyal and affectionate animals. The dog owner will always receive the credit for the impressive appearance and the good behavior of the dog. Simply put, a responsible and caring owner takes the time to provide the pet with the best care and attention to ensure its health and impressive appearance. The owner would also take time to socialize, obedience train and discipline the dog to mold the dog into a good canine citizen.

Dogs are not treated merely as pets but as members of the family. Considered as the baby of the family, dogs would receive all the love and attention from its human friends. With its lively and playful personality, a pet dog will be a kind of living toy that will be the ideal companion of the kids. The affection to the pet usually gives rise to unwanted behaviors when family allows the pet have its way. This would give rise to the situation where the dog will now own the humans instead of the other way around.

Dogs have the habit of chewing inappropriate items, jumping at people, filching food or raiding the trash and barking incessantly. Some dog owners have this notion that dogs should not be reprimanded for these unwanted habits as these are animals and therefore not expected to understand what is acceptable and what is not. Disciplining the pet though is one of the responsibilities of a dog owner.

The dog may be too effusive with its affection or too aggressive thus it would have to be disciplined. How would you discipline your dog? You know that disciplining the pet is necessary but would you inflict physical punishment or would you persuade the dog to accept you as the leader of the pack with toys and treats?

Dogs are intelligent animals but these animals would not understand the fact that they are being punished because they have done something wrong. The trick is to use something that will be remembered by the dog like being sprayed with cold water or being startled with the sound of rattling can. Every time the pet is at its hobby of raiding the trash can or barking at the passersby or tormenting the cat, use the spray bottle on the dog’s face or rattle the coins in the tin can. These methods that will serve as unpleasant stimuli would be more effective than physically punishing the pet.

The Significance of Obedience Training For Dogs

Any dog makes a cute pet; but trained dogs make great and beneficial companions too. Though affording a pet dog means a long-term commitment both in terms of cash and energy, being the owner of a well-trained dog is a question of dignity and is worth all of the investment.

The High Importance of Coaching

The inborn traits of any dog – chewing, running, barking or jumping, become quite a tribulation when they create trouble or nuisance in particular when you have guests at home, or you go visiting somebody with your canine friend. Dog training prepares the dog to adapt with ease to its human surrounding and to accept that his master is the figure of authority.

A great coaching would make your dog much loved by all and quite a pleasure for you.

Specialised Trainings

The typical coaching is the obedience coaching which shows the dog to obey to his master’s commands of: sit, stay, down, come, close and up. A dog that knows the”close” command can walk next to its owner on a loose leash. One can ask the seriousness of this command from any of the dog-walkers we see who get dragged or pulled by the over energized dog! The”up” command makes a dog majestically stand up on its hind legs rather than jump. It is actually a marvel to look at a hungry dog stand up for a nibble rather than jump crazily for it.

The other trainings include those that prepare a dog to perform special obligations as in law enforcement, army services, rescue operations, animal herding, hunting, be a help of those with physical or psychological impairements and of course entertainment.

The Various Techniques of Coaching

Reward a job well-done

This is the most appraised technique in a dog’s obedience training. Every’good’ action is reinforced by getting rewarded. The rewards are anything that the dog enjoys”food, game, petting and so on. Every dog has his own preferences, so understand what your dog looks forward to and give it whenever he exhibits the right behaviour.

Correct an unwelcome characteristic

While correcting the unwished-for behavior, trainers go for two basic tactics: The first one is the physical correction, where the dog is put on leash immediately following the”bad” behaviour. This makes the dog understand that his freedom would be curtailed if he repeats the behaviour. The second one is the word correction, where a predicted reward, like a chewy or a swim, is withdrawn. Therefore, corrections actually become a sort of punishing the dog for the’bad’ attitude displayed. A firm tone and hand gestures must be used to condone the unacceptable attitude while calling the dog name.

Disregard the undesired

This is a very important strategy and works best when used along with’rewarding the required attitude’. If you notice your dog doing something faulty but not dangerous, it works very well to ignore it. These attitudes will eventually go away with time as your dog understands that such a attitude gets him no attention.

Ultimately, the key’s to keep the classes short and the attitudes repetitive. It isn’t a good idea to use many training methods as they have an inclination to confuse your pet.

Although drooling is a natural act of dogs, not all dogs drool normally. People that love dogs certainly would not love drool. Unlike owners of normally drooling dogs, an owner of a pet that drools excessively would always need to have towels ready to clean the slobber from the dog’s mouth.

The saliva, an enzyme-rich liquid that is produced by the glands inside the dog’s mouth lubricates the food for easy chewing. All dogs would normally salivate at the sight of food. On the other hand, St. Bernard, Boxers and other breeds with loose skin folds in the mouth are known to be droolers because the saliva is contained in the mouth. Heavy droolers or not, dogs will remain man’s well loved, affectionate and loyal companions. Don’t be too concerned if your dog drools excessively as a bandana used as a bib would make the dog’s fur slobber-free.

An owner of a normally drooling dog that has suddenly developed an excessively dripping mouth should be concerned with the change as it can result to dehydration. Additionally, the dog’s hyper salivation can be a manifestation of an underlying disease. It can also be a manifestation of a foreign object or a health issue inside the mouth that stimulates the excessive secretion of the salivary gland. It is necessary for a dog owner to know the causes and effects of the dog’s excessive drooling. A dog that drools abnormally would be lethargic and have breathing difficulties. Headshaking and incessant mouth pawing should clue an owner that all is not well with the pet.

There are several causes of excessive drooling. Foreign objects inside the dog’s mouth would stimulate the abnormal secretion of the salivary glands. These foreign objects inside the dog’s mouth must be removed. Caution must be exercised in removing these foreign objects lest it cause the dog more injuries.

Excessive salivation can also be due to gum and dental problems. Abscessed tooth, gum infection or a mouth tumor can be the cause of heavy drooling. Eating difficulties; bad breath and pain are other symptoms of gum and dental health issues.

Motion sickness that causes the dog to drool is not life threatening. Bloat, heatstroke, rabies, poisoning are some underlying health concerns that causes the dog’s excessive drooling. Urgent medical attention is necessary for these serious health concerns to safeguard the life of the pet.

Humans and dogs have formed strong attachments because these affectionate and loyal animals have become the dependable companions, helpers and protectors of man. Humans have grown to love dogs because these animals that are considered as members of the family have become invaluable helpers and companions. Dogs are highly valued for their affectionate and loyal nature thus the love and care these animals receive from the family is the same as the love and care given to babies.

Dogs are kissed and cuddled and allowed to share the bed of the master. Because of the close attachment to the pet, owners would worry if something out of the ordinary is noticed in the pet. Pet parents would worry about the well being of the pet so that a pet noticed to be under the weather will be rushed to the vet.

Every little movement of the pet will be noticed by a loving pet parent because similar to a toddler, the dog will be constantly watched as well. A lot of dog owners may not know about twitching but because canine seizure is more common, the involuntary movement of the sleeping pet can be mistaken by the pet owner as a seizing episode. Dogs in deep sleep would twitch but because canine seizures are the concern of most pet owners, the twitching may be mistaken as seizure.

Seizing and twitching are involuntary movements that can be noticed in sleeping dogs. The difference though is that a seizing dog would have stiff movements. It will also be noticed that the seizing dog will be difficult to awaken as they will not be responsive to the voice of the owner. A twitching dog on the other hand can be easily roused from sleep. A twitching dog would easily respond to a pat or to the voice of the master. A seizing dog, especially one that is suffering from cluster seizing episodes would need medical attention.

Just like their human friends, dogs too would dream when they are sleeping deeply. The dog acting up a dream may growl, snap at insects and may pedal the legs as if running. The twitching dog may be dreaming of falling from heights. Twitching is normal in sleeping dogs but there are instances when a dog owner has to give attention to the twitching of the pet as it can be a symptom of a medical concern. Twitching is a sign of canine distemper. An advanced stage of distemper is one of the causes of twitching as the neurological system of the dog is severely affected.
