There are so many ways to train a dog, and each method will be different by the way that you use it and the way that your dog responds to it. There are certain qualities that all dog training programs share. Regardless of what training program you have chosen, you can make it much easier and enjoyable by using these ten dog training tips.

1. Dominance is Key You have probably heard the term, “Alpha-Dog”. Dogs are pack animals that co-exist together within a “pack”, or group. The leader of the pack, in each group, is called the alpha-dog. Dogs that are members of the pack will always follow the alpha-dog’s lead and submit to him. You are the alpha-dog of your dog’s pack, in this scenario, and you must make yourself known as this. If you do not do this, your dog will think that he is the alpha and will attempt to do whatever they want, whenever they want. Enforcing your authority and allowing your dog to see that you are the leader will make a big difference in training him more successfully.

2. Apply some patience. Having patience will take you far if you have it during the training of your dog. A new behavior or trick will not be learned by your dog in a day, regardless of what method you use. Even if you feel that your dog might be hopeless, you need to find your patience and keep working on it.

3. Never stop training. Perseverance is what comes hand in hand with patience. In a few days, some dogs might have the ability to learn a new ability or trick. Other dogs could take weeks of training. Sometimes your dog will act as though it has learned a behavior, but later you may find out that it really hasn’t. You have to work persistently with training your dog to make sure that the behavior stays with him.

4. Playtime is important. Your life should not revolve around training. Both you and your dog need playtime! Take time out of your day to play with your dog, and you will find training to be a lot simpler.

5. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise. Training will not necessarily amount to substantial exercise. Exercising your dog not only aids in the elimination of extra energy, but it additionally regulates their health to keep your dog at their best condition.

6. Don’t expect miracles. It’s a given that all of us would enjoy having a dog that could scale a ladder of dance for us. It may take longer to teach a dog some tricks than it does others. Your dog will be much happier and training him will be easier if you don’t have ridiculously high expectations of what you want your dog to learn.

7. Never use bribery. You should not overuse rewards or treats when it comes to training your dog. Doing this can give your dog the idea that treats are the only reason they follow your commands, not because you are in charge. Praise and occasional treats are important as reinforcement for positive behavior but you will end up disappointed later on if you use treats to get them to do what you want.

8. Keep things consistent. You will need a regular routine for your training. It is a well known fact that dogs thrive with routines and require a program. Sticking to a schedule will help your training stick and make everyone involved happier.

9. Never be harsh with punishments. Discipline is important if your dog should misbehave. However, discipline is to be stern, not cruel. Never shout or strike out at a dog, but instead employ a stern tone of voice – you will be given a more favorable response.

10. Get your family involved with training. All of the effort you invest with training will be ineffective if your family is not pitching in. If everyone is using the same method of training, then it will prevent confusion on your dog’s part, and make training easier.
