Ear mites are small bugs that look much like tiny ticks. These are barely seen without a microscope, and look like a small white dot on the skin of the ear. A vet will normally take a sample of ear wax from the animal to look at microscopically for diagnosis.

The infection that ear mites cause will normally look like coffee grounds, being a black dry discharge. This ear mite infection is generally diagnosed visually due to the discharge because the bugs are sometimes not found in the ear wax samples.

These bugs move from one host to another by simple close physical contact. The insects can come from any animal that your animal has been around for a period of time. Since they are so easily transmitted, treatment for one animal in the home means all animals in the home have to be treated as well.

These bugs can cause major ear infections and other skin diseases due to their tiny but numerous bites. This condition can be seen as intense itching and redness in and around the ear that the animal cannot control.

These bugs are contagious to any animal that is near by, and is prevalent in those that stay outside. The most common cases are in outside cats and those that are left outside for periods of time. In rare cases, humans will see the red skin rash but for most all people there are no symptoms at all when their animal is affected.

There are a few products and treatments that can be used for about 3 weeks or longer that are said to work well for this condition. Many of the over the counter medicines have insecticides but do not kill eggs of the bugs, so they have to be used for at least 3 weeks in order to kill all bugs that are in gestation at the time of the first application.

There is one medicine called Tresaderm that is well tolerated by animals and works ideally on the insects. It includes thiabendazole that kills the insects, cortisone for itching and an antibiotic to heal the infections. This can be found through your veterinary office with a prescription. Even though there are newer medicines available, this is still a favorite of veteran vets. Not considered the top of the line any longer, it is still prescribed regularly for this disheartening condition.

Ear mites are a common infection suffered by cats and dogs. They are more popular amongst cats. The mites resemble ticks and they are parasites that feed off of the animals ear wax. When a pet has these mites, it is best to seek a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Typically, an infection will show a black, crusty discharge. This is a mixture of the pet’s blood, ear wax and the mites. Veterinarians will test the presence of mites by examining the cat or dog’s ear wax under a microscope. If they do in fact see that this is the result of an infection caused by mites in the ear, they will prescribe the proper treatment.

The mite are parasites that tend to dwell on the surface of the animal’s ear. In cases of an extreme infection, the mites may travel to the animal’s face and head. The mites will lay their eggs on their host and they will typically hatch in four days. The hatched larva feeds off of the animal’s ear wax until it turns into mite.

If not treated, the mite will live in their host for approximately two months. They will continue to feed off of the animal’s ear wax. The mites will continue to lay eggs and grow new mites. This infection is seen in both dogs and cats but is more common in cats.

This type of infection is also very contagious. Even if you think your pet may have these mites but you are not sure, it is important to keep them away from other animals. The mites are transmitted through physical contact. They can jump from one host to the other. While your pet is being treated, they will need to be keep from other animals so they do not spread the infection.

A mite infection in the ears of cats and dogs are very uncomfortable for the animal. The skin becomes very irritated and sore from the infection. If not treated, the infection can lead to other types of skin diseases. There are many types of treatments available but it is important to first consult with your pet’s veterinarian.

Ear mites can be treated by many over the counter treatments that are available in pet stores. These treatments kill the eggs that are laid by the mites. They work according to the life cycle of the mite which is around three weeks. If the infection is severe, it is better to get prescription medication from a veterinarian. The veterinarian can prescribe more powerful treatments that will get rid of the infection in less time.

Ear mites in dogs is a difficult condition that is frustrating for the animal and the owner. If you cure ear mites, your pet will thank you for it.

If you fail to properly care for your dog, there is a chance that they can develop dog ear mites. Dog ear mites are defined as a blood sucking parasite that lives inside of the animals ear. Not only are these ear mites considered to be a major health risk for dogs, if they are not treated properly they can cause your animal to become deaf.

Household pets are prone to obtaining ear mites. The condition is fairly common in small animals, such as dogs, rabbits and cats. The mites can easily transfer themselves from one animal to another. Ear mites feed off of an animals bodily fluids in order to survive.

Normally, these mites are contracted when an animal is not properly taken care of. This particular infection can cause inflammation, open wounds and even redness in your dogs ear canal. There are some rare cases where animals can develop a crusty discharge from the mites.

Veterinarians generally diagnose an ear mite problem by performing an ear exam on an animal. They will extract a sample of the parasite from the animals ear canal and analyze the sample underneath a microscope. If you believe that your dog has contracted ear mites, you must keep them away from other animals. Ear mites can be transferred from one animal to the next, so secluding your animal from other animals is crucial.

A vet can prescribe a few different medications for the problem. There is an oral medication that they may prescribe, as well as a topical medication. Generally, the oral medications are prescribed when the condition has reached a severe point. Topical medications are prescribed when the condition can easily be managed. A topical medication will need to be applied directly to the site of the infestation, in order to treat the condition.

If you do not have the time or money to take your dog to the vet to have their problem treated, there are some medications that you can obtain over the counter. However, most of these medications do come in topical forms and you will be required to apply the medicine to the infested area. If your dogs condition is severe, then you will need to make time to take them to a vet.

Dog ear mites can be difficult to get rid of. However, as long as you ensure that your dog is not interacting with other animals while they are suffering from the condition and that they are receiving proper treatment for the ailment, the condition will normally clear up within one month.

Never cut the treatment regiment for dog ear mites short. If you do not follow the entire regiment, there is a chance that the condition will come back.

when your dog is continuously pawing and scratching at his ears, he might be suffering from dog ear mites. Prompt and aggressive ear mite treatment will provide relief from itching and open sores.

Finding a way to treat ear mites does not necessarily mean a trip to the veterinarian. These parasites left untreated can result in serious damage to an animal’s ears. Following some simple steps to clean their ears with mineral oil can help rid them of these potentially dangerous parasites.

Swollen, reddened or inflamed ears are a sign that your cat or dog probably has them. These parasites will infect the middle ear causing your pet’s balance to be unstable. As a result, they may walk in circles continuously or may not be able to walk at all. Sometimes they will have a fever and will act lethargic. They also tend to scratch at their ears and shake their head a lot.

If your cat or dog is showing all these signs that next step is to look in their ear to confirm they have them. If you see black or grey spots inside the ear, they have mites. Mineral oil is the best treatment for getting rid of these parasites.

Mineral oil does two important things for your pet’s ears. It will help dissolve earwax and blood or puss that may be plugging up the ear and it kills the mites by smothering them. The oil can be applied with an eye-dropper or a special ear irrigation pump.

Massage the ear after applying the oil. Gently grab their ear, place your thumb inside the ear and with your other fingers hold the outside of the animal’s ear. Rub the inside of the cat or dog’s ear to spread the oil. Do not go so deep into the ear that you hurt the inner ear. Let the thumb go down into their ear until you feel the inner ear, make sure the mineral oil has spread into their ear canal.

Once you have completed the massaging process, allow your cat or dog to shake the head discarding the oil and any loose dirt. It is best to try this process outside so your carpet and furniture will not get oil and the loose dirt all over them. If you still see black spots in the ear, wipe them out with a cotton ball. They should be loose enough to come out easily with a gentle wipe. It is better not to use a Q-tip as it may go to deep into the canal causing ear damage.

You can continue this process until you believe the ear mites are gone for good. If you notice after a week of treatments that they are not going away then you should contact your vet to take your dog or cat in for further treatments. The vet may end up giving you a prescription ointment to put in their ear. More than likely, a trip to the vet will not be necessary, as mineral oil is an excellent way to treat ear mites.

Your cats ear are delicate and when they endure the scratching that occurs from an ear mire infestation, they can not only look bad, they can become severely infected as well. Making sure to know how to get rid of ear mites cats get is important.

Ear mites can cause a lot of damage just by causing an animal to scratch relentlessly near and in the ear area. The itching associated with ear mites can be maddening because your pet can not reach the actual spot that is causing the problem.

You can get a specially designed collar for your pet to subdue the damage sustained from scratching during the treatment of ear mites. It is called an Elizabethan collar and is available from your vet. While your pet may look silly and uncomfortable, it still beats the outcome of not wearing one during this time.

You will need to look for ingredients like pyrethrin or ivermectin for the best and most effective treatments. You can also check for natural treatments for those pets that are sensitive to chemicals.

How well the cats ear is cleaned before applying treatment for ear mites is going to mean a lot in how effective the medication is going to be. You should let your vet do this to make sure that you getting the best pathway made for the medication for ear mites to go through. Without the right kind of cleaning, the time and effort for treatment may be a loss.

The black and hard bits that are coming from your cats ears during an infestation of ear mites is the waste left behind by the mites. While this may sound really bad, it is the reason for a good cleaning before mite treatment begins. This is also the reason for a lot of the scratching that your pet is doing as well.

The larvae from ear mites can spread to areas other than the ear. You should a total treatment with the same product you use for fleas and ticks. This is going to be the best way in preventing a re infestation of ear mites.

Don’t let your pet suffer from ear mites. You have ear mites cats and ear mites in dogs treatment that has been shown by the professionals to work. Don’t you want to help your dog and cats health?

When is it time for a home remedy ear mites treatment for your pet? Well, if you’ve witnessed him scratching or rubbing his ears, over and over – or noticed a thick, brown, crumbly material that always reappears in the ear canals – no matter how many times you’ve tried to remove it – it’s most likely time for a solution to a mite infestation.

Ear mites are parasites that feed off an animal’s blood supply, and are easily passed between those living in close quarters. Although known to infest dogs, they’re more common to cats and other types of pets, such as ferrets and rabbits. Left untreated, the pests continue to multiply, and feed off the blood and tissue. Not only does this cause pain and make the ears bleed, but in the long run, permanent damage, such as hearing loss, can occur from bacterial infections.

Not everyone has the money to take their pet into the vet when he’s sick, however, in the case of ear mites, luckily, there are some effective home remedies that should be able to help take care of the problem:

Using corn or mineral oil – Mineral oil works well for temporary mite control as it smothers them. Not only does corn oil so the same thing, but it also soothes irritated tissue, and contains properties that aid in speeding up healing time. Just take a few cotton balls, and put some corn oil on each. Carefully clean the ear – inside the canal and around the sides, every day for three days.

Olive oil – Olive oil has been proven to be beneficial to the health in many ways – and it’s also very good for killing off mites. If you’d prefer, almond oil can be substituted in its place.

To make a solution, take 400 IU of vitamin E oil and mix it with one half ounce of olive oil, and administer through a dropper. You need to be sure the solution is room temperature – and no colder – when you squeeze the dropper into the animal’s ear, or he’ll probably physically show you his discomfort. Clean the ear area and the canals carefully, with several clean cotton swabs. This treatment needs to be repeated every other day, for a total of 6 six days, then allow the ears to rest for three more. Upon resuming the treatment, repeat the same “every other day” protocol, this time for six weeks – as this breaks the reproduction cycle.

Yellow dock root extract – An effective and safe way to eradicate ear mites, you simply mix 9 drops of extract into one tablespoon of water, and apply the 1/2 ounce of solution – at room temperature – with an ear dropper. Mite eggs aren’t easily killed off with one application, so it’s important to repeat this protocol every other day for six days, and then let the pet’s ears rest for another three, before starting again. On the fourth day, start the “every other day” schedule and keep it going until the end of six weeks. By using this formula for the prescribed length of time, the reproduction cycle of the mites will eventually be broken.

White vinegar swabs – Swabbing with white vinegar diffused with water, works miracles in removing dirt and debris from an animal’s ears, however, keep in mind it’s very acidic and could sting a pet with irritated tissues or opens sores. Don’t use this treatment if your pet has these conditions in his ears, or you will probably pay the price with a sharp nail or two to the hand.

White vinegar – Although very acidic, and not to be used on those animals with open sores or other irritations of the ear – white vinegar diluted with water, is extremely effective in removing gunk and other debris from the ear canals.

So even if paying a vet for treatment isn’t an option for you, one of the home remedies you’ve just learned should be able to help. In treating your friend, keep in mind that it won’t exactly be a “treat” for him, so you may want to have someone standing by to assist you when you do it.

Fighting ear mites is a bummer! Why not try some ear mites treatment? Home remedy ear mites is generally the first choice over prescription medications.

When a person first notes a pet scratching at their ear there is fear of a possible ear infection, growth or something else that will need an immediate visit to the veterinarian. Before taking this action one should investigate the possibility of mites and search out information regarding an ear mite treatment for pets.

These mites spread very easily from one animal to another and, if there are more than one animal in a house, they should also be examined to see if they have this same problem. Living in the ear canal, they live on ear wax and sometimes blood in that area. When chewing up this material they produce a brown, crumbly, coffee-like material. After removing this from the ear, careful examination will show small, white mites. They are as small as a typed period.

A mite lays its eggs, which hatch in only four days. This makes it obvious that if treatment is not initiated at the first sign of trouble it can worsen very rapidly. Feeding on the earwax it quickly becomes an adult, mates, and produces more mites. These can very soon spread to the head and eye areas causing further problems.

Ear mites are miserable for a pet and are most common in cats, rarely in dogs. They cause itching and redness of the ears and are comparable to a yeast or bacterial infection. They can cause other diseases if not identified and treated. Once the problem has been identified, the next step is finding some kind of treatment to eliminate this problem.

Various medications for this condition are available today. Some must be prescribed or injected by a veterinarian, others are available over-the-counter. They can take as long as one application or 30 days, depending on the method chosen. Following the directions is necessary if a complete cure is to be obtained.

Some one time treatment medication contains Acarexx and Melbnite; some ten day treatment uses Tresaderm and medication which is injected contains Ivermectin. The majority of the over-the-counter medications contain certain insecticides. These are by no means the only kinds of medication available for treatment of this condition and a pet owner should research to determine the best possible medicine for their pet.

Placing a few drops of warm oil in the pet’s ear has been suggested. This will soften the debris and make it easier to remove. It will also immobilize the mites for a brief period and make them more removable with the other material. When the substance is removed, it is suggested that it be burned or destroyed in a permanent manner to avoid the mites transferring to another location.

A pet is like a family member and one wishes them to be comfortable and happy in their surroundings. When a condition such as ear mites occurs, and is made obvious by trying to scratch the ear, it is important that immediate action be taken. Relief needs to be obtained as soon as possible by locating an ear mite treatment for pets.

Learn about the easy home remedies ear mites will respond to when you get the details today! Using the best ear mite treatment will keep your pets ears healthy and ear mites under control.

Ear mites might affect many pets, and are a common problem that can be very distressing for the animal concerned. Furthermore, if left unhindered ear mites can lead to more distressing and serious illnesses and an unhappy feeling for a cat or dog. For this reason it is vital that the pet owner knows what ear mites are, how to kill them, and what to look for to spot them.

What are Ear Mites? Ear mites are miniature insects that feast on the blood and nutrients found in an animal’s skin; they appear as, when magnified, crabs and have legs that latch on to the host with some strength. Very difficult to remove, the mite is a supremely distasteful creature that can bring discomfort to a much-loved family pet.

They live on the upper edges of the ear canal and thrive on the debris that is left there, and are very much contagious, moving from animal to animal very rapidly indeed. In fact, ear mites may also be passed to human sufferers, but are more likely to be seen on domestic pets and farm animals. It must be remembered they can spread between species – a cat may pass to a dog, or vice versa – and that individual animals react in various ways to the presence of mites. Ear mites are a very regular cause of illness in cats and dogs, primarily young kittens and puppies, and can cause the animal to hurt frequently.

This can cause illness later, as incessant scratching – particularly in cats – might mean causing blood vessels to break, bringing about unwanted infection and a more worrying level of suffering as well as the possibility of lifelong disfigurement. In addition, if left to spread the mites can lead to bacterial illnesses and more, and this has been proven to lead to a rupturing of the eardrum – a painful affliction that leads to deafness in the animal. How to Spot Ear Mites There are several symptoms that give clues to the presence of ear mites in cats and dogs.

The first is the usual increase in scratching of the infected area that accompanies the onset of mites, and this can also be indicated by an exaggerated and violent shaking of the head, as if trying to dislodge something that is clinging on (which is, of course, exactly what the animal is trying to do.) The ear produces wax as a matter of course, and the presence of mites might cause this to be done.

The Anatomy of the Canine Ear

The Anatomy of the Canine Ear

A dogs ears are the same as a persons ears in that their main function is hearing. Dog ears just do not look like peoples ears. The outside part of the ear is called the pinna. In some dogs it is floppy (like a Basset Hound) and in some dogs it stands up (like a Corgi). The pinna helps to funnel sound into the ear canal. Whereas people have a straight ear canal, the ear canal in the dog is a little L shaped. It is made up of the vertical (descending) canal and the horizontal canal. The horizontal canal ends at the eardrum, or tympanic membrane. The eardrum is a transparent membrane that separates the external ear from the middle and inner ear.

Common Causes of Dog Ear Infections

The most common is an infection of the outside of the ear including the horizontal and vertical canals. This infection is referred to as Otitis Externa and is caused by three main reasons; ear mites, bacteria and yeast.

Ear mite infections are caused by the mite Otodectes cynotis. Ear mite infections are seen more in puppies than adult dogs, but any dog can get ear mites. A dog gets ear mites from other infected dogs. Ear mites can live in the ear and on the head and neck.

Staphylococcus is the most common cause of bacteria related ear infections. Malassezia is the most commonly seen cause of yeast related ear infections. These two types of infections are seen more frequently than ear mite infections. However, there are predisposing factors that make your dog susceptible. They include:

Ear canal conformation – Ear canals that are very small or longer than normal retain debris and moisture that can lead to an ear infection.

Excessive Ear Canal Hair – When there is too much hair in the ear canal, it tends to trap debris and retain water which leads to ear infections.

Swimming or living in humid areas – Water retained in the horizontal canal after swimming can lead to an ear infection. In humid climates, water from the air may accumulate in the ear canal leading to an ear infection.

Folded or Floppy Pinna – If the pinnae are folded over or cover the vertical ear canal, debris and water can become trapped, thus resulting in infection.

Allergies to Food – Not only will food allergies cause skin problems; they can also alter the environment of the ear canal. When this happens excess moisture is retained and results in ear infections.

Seasonal or Inhalant allergies (atopy) – An allergic response to grass, trees, mold, dust, etc. can change the environment of the ear canal leading to moisture build-up and an ear infection. Dogs with seasonal allergies will usually have other skin problems, too.

Systemic Disease – Hypothyroidism or other diseases that affect the endocrine system hamper the immune systems ability to fight infection. When both of these afflictions occur, an ear infection is inevitable.

A Growth or Foreign Object – If there is an abnormal mass or some kind of foreign particle in the ear, it can trap debris and moisture causing an ear infection.

Cleaning the ears too much and leaving water or cleanser in the ears may also predispose a dog to getting ear infections.
