Mushrooms are seen sprouting anywhere. The dog’s curious nature, voracious appetite and the inclination to wander often land the pet in dangerous situations – one of which is poisoning. The dog will be poisoned by mushrooms if it happens to ingest the toxic kind.

Dogs can gain healthful benefits from eating mushrooms. Apart from the taste, mushrooms are good sources of niacin, riboflavin and the other B vitamins. Dog owners include mushrooms in the diet of the dog because this human food is a good source of antioxidants known to prevent the development of cancer. Dogs with diabetes are given mushrooms because it has the capability to lower blood sugar levels.

Dogs can get all the mushrooms they can consume however, some species of this fungus can cause mild to fatal poisoning. The level of toxicity would depend upon the kind of mushroom ingested thus the dog can have mild stomach upset or suffer cell damage in the liver or kidneys.

Minutes after ingesting poisonous mushroom, the dog will be seen vomiting and having diarrhea. Abdominal pain, lethargy and muscle weakness are other clinical signs of poisoning. The toxic substance will cause the yellowing of the dog’s eyes and mucus membranes. These are indications that the cells of the liver are already affected by the toxin. The kidney of the dog will be affected by the toxic substance too. The dog could seize and end up going into coma. A dog can die from ingesting poisonous mushrooms.

Mushroom poisoning needs immediate medical treatment. The owner may be aware of this fact but if the dog was not caught in the act of eating mushrooms, the owner would not know what happened to the pet. Bits of mushrooms in the vomit would clue the owner that the pet has eaten mushrooms. It is imperative for the dog to have professional medical treatment as mushroom poisoning cannot be treated at home. Activated charcoal will be administered to stop the toxin from being absorbed by the body. Syrup of Ipecac or hydrogen peroxide will be given to the dog to induce vomiting.

Dog owners must have an idea how Amanita phalloides looks because it is a highly toxic mushroom. The hazards of poisonous mushrooms in dogs is quite high given the fact that mushrooms pop up anywhere. Poisonous and non-poisonous mushrooms are hard to identify as they almost look the same. To prevent poisoning, it would be necessary to steer the pet away from areas where mushrooms grow.

When it comes to the health of the pet it pays to heed the experts advice. Food poisoning can be prevented if the dog is given foods specifically formulated for dogs. A pet parent will certainly prevent the pet from eating if it is known that the food is poisonous. However, not many dog owners are aware that some common human foods can have toxic effects on the dog.

Dogs are omnivorous thus they would eat just about anything. Dogs, like humans would gain a lot of healthful benefits from eating fruits. Fruits are loaded with vitamins that will enhance the immune system of the dog and also strengthen the intestinal muscles for easier waste elimination. Dogs owners can give the pet any kind of fruits but not grapes and avocados. An unknown substance in grapes and raisins is toxic to dogs as it can cause severe kidney damage. Avocado is very dangerous for dogs as ingestion of the fruit, leaves, bark and pit can result to the death when the toxin causes fluid to accumulate in the dogs chest, heart and abdomen.

The theobromine in chocolates and the caffeine in tea and coffee are naturally occurring stimulants that can have fatal effect on the dog as these substances when ingested in large amounts affects the nervous system and the heart. A dog lover would always be amused by dogs that have learned to do tricks. It would be a big accomplishment if a dog owner can teach the dog to drink beer from the can but ingestion of alcoholic beverages would have ill effects that can result to the death of the pet. The chemical compound in alcoholic beverages called ethanol cannot be tolerated by the dogs system. This substance that is rapidly absorbed by the dogs system will affect the central nervous system and cause respiratory depression. Inducing the pet to vomit will not be helpful as the toxin is readily absorbed by the body thus urgent medical attention is necessary.

Onion is another common human food that is poisonous to dogs. This human food has thiosulfate that destroys the dogs red blood cells. This substance is not destroyed by cooking thus the dog can be poisoned if regularly fed human foods that have onion as an ingredient. Onion consumption can result to the death of the dog.

Foods that are safe for humans may have harmful effects on the dog. Although it is said that humans and dogs have many genetic similarities, the difference in metabolism makes dog intolerable of some human foods.

A dog’s eyesight is not at par with its scenting and hearing abilities. Can you help a dog that has jumped into a window thinking that it is not glassed off? Running through a glassed off wall is one of the accidents where the dog can get seriously cut. Serious cuts can be sustained by a dog hit by a speeding car. Broken glass, jagged tins and sharp metals can cause laceration and serious cuts on the dog’s paws and skin.

A dog is an accident prone animal thus an owner has to have what it takes to provide the pet with emergency care. In situations where the services of a vet is not available or when taking the injured pet to a nearby veterinary facility is not possible, the only way by which a dog owner can save the life of the pet or prevent the pet from suffering too much pain is to administer first aid.

The abrasions and the simple cuts of a dog are often ignored and not treated. This can be due to the fact that these simple injuries are not noticed by the dog owner. First aid must be given to dogs with serious cuts as severe bleeding and blood loss can make a dog go into shock that may result to the death of the pet. Professional medical treatment is necessary for serious cuts as anesthetizing the dog and suturing the wound may be necessary.

How can a dog owner know that the pet has incurred serious wounds? A gaping gash, a deep puncture and badly torn skin that cannot be held together are signs that the dog’s injuries are serious. Fat and muscle that can be seen on the cut skin is an indication that the dog has sustained serious injuries. Generally, serious cuts are heavy bleeders. Bleeding of serious cuts would be very hard to control.

Before any first aid can be done, the extent of the dog’s injury has to be assessed. The cut must be flushed with saline solution. After the wound is cleaned, the bleeding has to be controlled by using sterile gauze or any clean cloth available to apply pressure to the wound.

A cut gushing red blood is a life threatening injury as it signifies arterial bleeding. This kind of bleeding has to be controlled immediately thus flushing the wound to remove dirt and foreign object must not be done. With towels or cloth, apply pressure directly to the cut. Add another towel on top of the blood soaked towel. Applying pressure to cut to control bleeding must not be stopped while the pet is being rushed to the hospital.

At Sarah’s Dogs you can find out more about dog first aid as well as serious cuts.

Dogs make wonderful companions and one pet would not be enough because they are almost addicting. Many dog owners would want to breed the pet with outstanding qualities. Breeding the beloved pet would mean more pets to love and to share with family members. Watching the pregnant pet deliver the puppies would be a wonderful experience.

Domesticated dogs, just like their ancestors in the wild can whelp easily – without needing any assistance from humans. Whelping though is not always normal and difficult labor that would endanger the lives of the dam and the puppies can occur. All the necessities that will make the whelping dog comfortable must be provided by the owner. To be able to give urgent assistance, a dog owner has to be able to promptly recognize the signs that the pet is having difficulties in delivering the puppies. Apart from recognizing the telltale signs, a dog owner also has to have first aid knowledge to be able to help the pet.

The pregnancy of a dog generally lasts from eight to nine weeks. At the end of this period, the whelping box lined with old blankets should be ready. Other equipments that must be readied are scissors or dental floss to cut the puppies’ umbilical cord and towels. One very important tool that will let the dog owner know that the pet is ready to give birth is a thermometer. Twelve to twenty four hours before the dog whelps, the normal body temperature of 101.5 °F will drop 2 to 3 degrees.

The dog usually takes care of the birthing. After the puppy was delivered, the mother dog will take care of the cleaning and the cutting of the of the umbilical cord. However, there are instances when the dog would not know what to do. This situation commonly happen to dogs that gave birth for the first time. It will be the dog owner’s task to tear the sac to prevent the puppy from suffocation. The dog owner has to clean the puppies as well.

A whelping dog with a puppy stuck half in and half out would need urgent help. With a clean towel, grasp the protruding part and pull in a downward motion. Remove a dead puppy stuck in the birth canal immediately. Removal of the dead puppy in the birth canal should be done by a vet but in a pinch the owner can lubricate the hand with K-Y jelly and try to remove the puppy. This aggressive effort of removing the dead pup will be very necessary to save the life of the dam and the unborn puppies.

Dog owners spend thousands of dollars on pet food just to make sure that the pet that is considered as the baby of the family is provided with good nutrition. The begging expression on the dog’s face would be very difficult to resist thus anything the pet wants will be given by the owner. Because of the owner’s love for the pet, the master’s place on the bed or on the coach will be occupied by the dog. In most cases, the begging dog would have a bite of the food the master is eating. This kind of situation would do the pet no harm unless the food that the owner allowed the pet to eat is not tolerated by the dog’s systems.

A dog owner has to have an idea what foods are toxic to the pet. Fruits and vegetables are healthy food for humans. Dogs must steer clear of grapes, avocados, from tomatoes and potatoes as well as from mushroom and broccoli as these foods can cause poisoning. Because of a different metabolism; dogs’ systems cannot tolerate these fruits and vegetables. Dogs must be prevented from eating fruit seeds and pits because of the cyanide they contain.

Dairy products especially when consumed in large amounts would have dangerous effects on the pet. Coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages as well as chocolate and sugar-free candies are unsafe foods for dogs too. Onions and garlic are poisonous to dogs thus food containing these ingredients must not be given to the dogs.

Dogs in the wild eat their food raw. However, raw fish, raw eggs and raw meat must not be included in the dog’s diet. Thiamin deficiency results if a dogs is regularly given raw fish and this condition can result to seizures and the death of the dog. Raw eggs may contain Salmonella and e coli bacteria that can affect the dog. Moreover, dogs that regularly consume raw eggs can develop poor coat and other skin concerns because of the avidin, an enzyme that is found in raw eggs. Fat trimmings and excessively fatty foods must not be given to dogs either as it can trigger a pancreatitis attack. In dogs, fatty foods will cause the pancreas to get inflamed and to rupture and cause digestive enzymes to seep into the other organs.

Vomiting and diarrhea are the manageable consequences of giving the dog toxic human foods but some foods have more serious effects that results to the death of the dog.

Not all human foods are safe for dogs. Find out what foods are toxic to dogs at Sarah’s Dogs.

Is the belief that an ugly dog also has an ugly owner true? It is widely believed that the appearance of the pet is a reflection of the way it is cared for and treated by the owner. A dirty and mangy dog, or one that has an emaciated look will be pitied and the owner will be scorned. People will believe that the owner is not fit to keep a dog for a pet.

A healthy diet would not be enough to keep the pet healthy and looking good. A dog owner has to be aware of the fact that the pet needs to be regularly groomed to maintain its impressive appearance and also to resolve parasite infestation that can lead to various health concerns.

Most dogs have been infested by fleas as fleas are the most common parasites of dogs. Fleas are annoying parasites but aside from the discomfort, the infestation can also result to some health concerns. A dog infested with fleas would be seen incessantly scratching and biting its body. Dogs infested with fleas can develop flea allergy dermatitis if they have sensitivity to the parasite’s saliva. The bald patches on the skin and the oozing sores will certainly mar the appearance of the pet. A dog severely affected by fleas can suffer from anemia. Moreover, fleas can introduce tapeworms not only to the dog but also to the dog’s human family if flea-carrying tapeworm eggs are accidentally ingested.

Regular grooming will prevent the development of flea infestation. Dogs come in contact with these parasites when they play with infested dogs or when they pass areas where fleas lurk to wait for potential host. Flea products can kill adult fleas but not the eggs thus a flea infestation has the tendency to recur.

Grooming the pet regular is therefore very important. The dog can be bathed with anti-flea shampoo. Allow the lather to stay for about 10 minutes before rinsing the dog thoroughly. Run a fine toothed comb to the dried hair to remove dead fleas. Vacuum the house thoroughly especially the carpet and the areas where the dog usually sleeps. The beddings and the toys of the dog must be washed in hot water as well.

A regular grooming routine allows the dog owner to act on a developing parasite infestation before it worsens. Furthermore, the grooming sessions enables the owner to strengthen the bond with the pet.

Ticks are one of the freeloaders that pester dogs. Ticks are parasitic arthropods that cause the dog mild irritation but dog owners dread tick infestation as ticks that feed on the dog’s blood can cause anemia. These parasites are bad news for dog and dog owner because of the tick borne disease that would affect not only the dog but humans as well. If your pet has these free loaders on its body, it is highly probable that the pet would get Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis.

After the transmission of the tick borne disease, the dog will be lethargic, have fever and show signs of weakness. A dog affected by a tick borne disease can suffer from temporary paralysis. These health concerns though can be easily resolved if the tick that is feeding on the dog’s blood is removed at once

Due to a high prey drive dogs are often seen wandering in grassland and woodland trails as these animals would be happiest if they are trailing prey. However, there are times when instead of coming home with a hunted prey, the dog would come home with a parasite on its back. Ticks are parasites that would patiently wait in grassland for potential hosts. These parasites have sensors that can detect approaching warm blooded creatures. Ticks have the ability to jump like a flea so that when an animal is sensed by the sensors, the tick would jump into the potential host, latched its mouth into the skin and begin a bloodmeal.

A tick that is as small as a pencil point can grow as big as a raisin when engorged with blood. Tick borne disease will not be transmitted to the dog immediately even though the ticks would start feeding on the dog’s blood. This is where the importance of grooming comes in. Even if the dog is infested with ticks, transmission of diseases can be prevented if the ticks are removed at once.

Careful inspection of the dog after it has been out in grassy and wooded areas is important especially if tick infestation is common in the area. The coat must be brushed and the hand run through the dog’s body to feel for small bumps. Removing ticks is not difficult but it has to be done carefully. Unlike fleas that are hard to remove by hand, ticks remain stationary. Using tweezers that is positioned close to the dog’s skin, pull the tick without squeezing the body to prevent the parasite from injecting the dog with disease-causing bacteria. Use the tweezers again if the head of the tick was left embedded into the skin. Use antiseptic solution to clean the bite area.
